Carey Lyon

Practice Executive, Directors

Carey Lyon is one of the Founding Directors of Lyons whose impact upon Australia’s architecture industry is immense. He is an acknowledged leader in design within Australia for the award-winning projects he has led and co-led, his long-standing role as Professor of Architecture at RMIT University and peer-elected positions for national architecture bodies.

Over the last three decades Carey has amassed a wealth of experience leading and designing multi-million-dollar public, commercial, cultural and institutional projects. His expertise as a collaborator and creative consultant have been integral in winning Lyons international recognition and many awards for spaces that exceed the needs of the communities they are designed for.

Carey shares his breadth of experience everyday, as a Director at Lyons and Professor at the RMIT University’s School of Architecture and Design, to encourage deeper discourse into design outcomes. His commitment to teaching and design research led Carey to successfully complete his Doctorate of Philosophy from RMIT University in 2018.

Among his contemporaries, Carey’s leadership in architectural design within a national context is demonstrated by repeated invitations to serve on architectural design competition juries and peer-elected positions he has served under. In 2005 Carey was elected by his peers as the National President of the Australian Institute of Architects – in a lead advocacy role for design within the national context. He is also an acknowledged leader in sustainability, and has acted as a Director and Board member of the Green Buildings Council of Australia (2007 – 2014).

“Architecture is about ideas, it’s a player in the contest of ideas that make for better cities, worthy places for our community, and holds within it the stories and aspirations of our local culture – and these ideas can be grand or small, arrive directly from our clients or from our own interests as architects, or they are discovered through the creative conversations we encourage on every one of our projects.”

Design philosophy

“Ever enthralling to me is the overall creative enterprise of working with clients to use architecture to bring their vision into a design idea. ”

Working with you

“Public spaces aren’t created for a small few, so neither should they be designed by a small few. Every day I have the privilege to collaborate with other likeminded creatives, including our extraordinary creative clients.”
